It Could Happen to You

It’s like we’re on two different channels now. I’m CNN and she’s the Home Shopping Network.

A cop (Nicolas Cage) caught with no money at a diner tells the waitress (Bridget Fonda) that in lieu of her tip he’ll split his lottery winnings with her if he wins. The next day he unexpectedly hits the jackpot and decides to make good on his promise to the waitress, much to the chagrin on his wife (Rosie Perez).

This is some peak 90s feel-good rom-com fodder that for whatever reason seems to fly under the radar. Perhaps it’s not as snappy or memorable as Nora Ephron’s work. Perhaps Nicolas Cage has made so many bad career choices that only apologists such as myself will watch anything with him in.

Either way It Could Happen to You has got buckets of charm and some real heart at its core. Cage and Fonda are fun to watch and it’s a joy to see their relationship unfold.

A forgotten gem.
